Training Plan for 2018!

I’m always interested in other people’s training plans, so I thought I would share mine for the remainder of 2018.  It should be noted that my husband and I will likely have to make adjustments as life happens.  Our plan is derived a little from the Jeff Galloway plan and a little from the Under Armour Run Trainer App.

***DISCLAIMER*** What you see below is what a perfect week would look like.  We rarely have a perfect week.  Sometimes the cross train (XT) is grocery shopping if I can’t manage to make my self do any yoga or strength training.  But, this is always the goal. Maybe someday I’ll be able to do it all perfectly!

Now that we’ve had one full year of training and running a couple of half marathons, I feel more confident in our abilities (at least when it comes to 13.1 miles–26.2 is a whole other story!). Those 20 mile days though–intimidating to say the least.  Not to mention, they are in August and September! We’re going to have to start out at 4:30 am in order to finish before the southern heat and humidity take us out. The best part of running to me is the feeling of accomplishing the impossible. 20 miles feels impossible today. Likely 20 miles will feel impossible on the day we set out to run them. But, on those days, my faith just grows like crazy. Every step is a gift from God. Every pain and labored breath is a reminder to call out to Him for strength. Watching Him accomplish the impossible through me–it’s about the best feeling ever.

Something people should know about me is that I am a BIG planner.  I love making plans. I love making to-do lists and checking things off.  I’m like a personal travel guide on all our family vacations, giving each family member a daily itinerary and meal plan.  I love planning and dreaming and laying out the details of the next several hours, days, weeks, months, and years.  However, I know my plans are not always what God has planned.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Do I pray God blesses our training plans and keeps us healthy so we can accomplish all we want to do in 2018? Do I pray we end the year with another 1/2 Marathon Medal and a shiny Marathon Medal? You bet! But I have faith that God knows a whole lot more than I do. And if something happens that changes the plans or cancels the whole thing, He will still bless us for our obedience and ultimately give us something even better than shiny medal.

If you’re wishing you could run, but can’t right now because of health, please take some advice from my friend Cheryl and “do what you can and never give up.” There are thousands of exercises you can find online even if you are restricted on your mobility. Having a goal and accomplishing a task is one of the best ways to fight depression and find joy. Know that I would love to cheer you on and hear how you are declaring “Not Today, MS” in your life!
